This is our modular tiny house prototype we built in 2024. We are working with a factory in Paarl to produce these units. |
π οΈ What We Are Setting Up To Build
Category | Examples |
---|---|
π‘ Off-Grid Tiny Homes | Fully modular, solar-ready, net-zero designs |
π Infrastructure Pods | Battery boxes, solar stations, utility trailers |
πͺ± Living Systems Modules | Compost toilets, worm farms, greywater showers |
π½οΈ Outdoor Amenities | Kitchens, washing stations, fold-out dining decks |
πͺ Landscape Furniture | Artistic benches, shaded desks, tool storage |
Each item is designed for real-world deployment β beauty meets function.
π Why It Matters
βIf we want a different future, we need different tools.β
Most housing is unaffordable, immobile, or energy-intensive
DIY off-grid solutions are often clunky or inaccessible
Tools for regeneration are scattered, unstandardised, or poorly made
Even regenerative spaces lack unified, practical, scalable design
Formations solves this by offering:
Modular, prefab structures that deploy anywhere
Cohesive design logic across Maslow branches
Durable, field-tested builds for real-world use
π§βπ Who Itβs For
π Builders & Makers β Wanting to join or replicate our designs
π Off-Grid Seekers β Looking for functional, beautiful shelter
π± Landowners & Communities β Needing plug-and-play infrastructure
π§βπ Regenerative Schools β Wanting hands-on learning structures
π Maslow Divisions β In need of rapid-deploy assets

Sanitation
Flush the old paradigm.
Odor-free, urine-diverting toilet inserts that slot into our bath pods or retrofit existing bathroomsβturning waste into worm-ready substrate.

Circularity
Circular systems that close the loop on waste.
Grease traps, worm baths, back of house laundry and bin shoots, grey-water irrigation to nearby banana circles and grow beds, concealed waste stations shipped as modular units to close the loop behind the scenes.

π History
Jaydon Meidlinger and Bernard Myburgh met at Geoff Lawton's PDC in South Africa in 2022. Jaydon is an architect and has built the tiny house he lives in with his family. We realised after a few conversations how aligned we were, and we just knew we had to get started even though we didn't have all the answers.
When we started this mission on October 1st 2023, we had a simple question: how do we solve for human needs sustainably? What even are human needs? How do meet human needs to such a point that people can live with zero cost of living in balance and harmony with nature, not just surviving but thriving in abundance. No more job just to earn money just to keep paying for your survival long enough to keep doing the job, so that you can pay to keep surviving, etc etc. What structures and tools do we need to build community and go off-grid for real. (Okay, so a few questions. And I guess they're not simple.) But we knew it had something to do with solving for Shelter (which has now become "π‘ Formations") and Food (Which starts with the soil, and has now become "β»οΈ GroundSwell".
How do we make shelter that is affordable, transportable, modular and extremely liveable and resilient. We settled on a few designs and got to work:

Building this prototype was exactly what we needed to do in order to make all the mistakes of developing a product for the market. We want to be able to build tiny houses for our friends and family and for anyone looking to start their journey back to nature. A solid structure to land in. Something we can build in a factory that scales and brings the cost per unit down, allowing people to settle into nature, into food abundant landscapes in a comfortable lasting way, allowing them to scale down their energy use and slow down their busy lives.

We are in the process of standardising the modular units and will soon add them to the Formations dashboard, stay tuned!
