Scales of Permanence

Scales of Permanence

Definition

A permaculture design hierarchy that ranks landscape elements by how difficult they are to change, from climate (most permanent) to aesthetics (least).

Interpretation

Design from the bones. The scales of permanence teach us to start with the unchangeable β€” sun angles, wind, water β€” and only then layer the rest. It’s about working with what is, not forcing what isn’t.

Living Invitation

Assess your living space: What’s permanent (climate, aspect)? What’s flexible (plants, furniture, routines)?
