Water as Metaphor

Water as Metaphor

Definition

The symbolic use of water to represent emotions, flow, change, or purification in literature, philosophy, and spirituality.

Interpretation

Water is emotion. Water is spirit. Water is transition. In nearly every culture, water is a symbol for that which cannot be held โ€” only moved through. We use water to describe what it means to be alive.

Living Invitation

Write a poem or journal entry using water as metaphor. Ask: where am I a river, a puddle, a storm, or a well?
